NSF’s NOIRLab (formally named the National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory) is the US national center for ground-based, nighttime optical astronomy. NOIRLab serves as a focal point for community development of innovative scientific programs, the exchange of ideas, and creative development.

The institution is seeking a dynamic, tech-savvy Motion Graphics Designer who is experienced in sharing the beauty and excitement of astronomy with the world to join our growing team in developing content for NOIRLab’s expanding user base, both internally and externally.

The responsibilities include the development of fulldome and 360-degree content using 3D modelling software, transmedia use of content, and working with partners and artists and real-time systems (incl. hands-on scripting). Initially, this position will be responsible for the development of a fulldome planetarium program highlighting the concepts of Multi-Messenger and Time-Domain astronomy in support of the GEMMA NSF grant (Gemini in the Era of Multi-Messenger Astronomy). Subsequent program development will be primarily in support of the Windows Center, an astronomy learning center at the recently retired McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona.

The role will utilize various graphic and 3D and planetarium-specific programs (incl. The Adobe suite), cameras, and planetarium software. The successful applicant will work with staff, vendors, universities, and the local host communities (Hawaii, Chile and Arizona) to create storyboards, concepts, audiovisuals for appealing, world-class planetarium shows, news and 360-degree materials.

The astronomy visualization and projection systems Science on a Sphere (SOS) and digital planetarium systems are at the heart of our Windows Center. This position will work out of NOIRLab Headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, with possible hybrid work arrangements possible for partial remote work. We expect this position to last through end of 2025 with potential extension based on funding.
