About me

My name is Sam Stevens, I am a lifelong artist and musician specializing in immersive media production. I have been passionate about art, music, film, and planetariums since a young age. I bring a great deal of experience and passion for creating artistic immersive experiences that engage and inspire a wide range of audiences and have a strong background in designing and trouble-shooting highly advanced creative technology. I am an expert in all of the programs within the Adobe Creative Suite, Unreal Engine 5, Houdini, Cinema 4D with Redshift, PTGui Pro, Unity, Metashape and Compere. I am also proficient in DigitalSky 2, OpenSpace, C#, Python, ZBrush, Adobe Substance Painter, Blender, Medialon and Delta. I excel at creative problem solving and find a great deal of purpose in everything that I create. Over the past sixteen years I have specialized in creating immersive, nature-themed environments in the form of 18K hand-stitched 360° panoramas for planetariums, VR and virtual tours. To-date, I have Directed, Produced and Composed two 360° Visual Albums specially created for both 4K Fulldome and 8K VR, as well as several other immersive formats which have yet to be seen in this space. The first of these films titled, Keep Searching, premiered at the Fiske Planetarium and OMSI planetarium in 2023, and is now available for planetariums worldwide to license through REEF Distribution. I have worked on thirteen Fulldome films to date, eight of which were produced for the Fiske Planetarium to educate the public about astronomy and are actively distributed to hundreds of planetariums throughout the world. I have experience in show programming as well as network engineering and recently worked as the Senior Systems Engineer for 7thSense supporting the Sphere in Las Vegas. In 2016 I completed the MORPHOS FullDome Artist In-Residency which focuses on FullDome media production for planetariums and digital domes, VR development and programming interactive art installations. I designed and co-developed a Unity app for live FullDome VJing in 360° planetariums and have used this app in my VJ performances at large festivals and concerts including Decadence Denver and Red Rocks Museum. I have been a Certified Unity Developer since 2018 and I have shipped a virtual reality game titled Peaceful Places VR which I designed, developed and produced. I am experienced in cross-platform software development using various SDKs and I have experience managing a small team of creatives, developers, marketers, and audio engineers. I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts (MA) in Realtime Art & Visual Effects (RAVE) at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (FH Salzburg), with a specialization in Environment Art & World Building with UE5, Houdini & ZBrush. The master's program includes coursework in Environment Art & World Building, Realtime VFX, Procedural Modeling, UE5 Blueprints, Photogrammetry, Python Coding, Technical Mathematics, Concept Development & AI Prompt Engineering. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in Media Production and a minor in Creative Technology and Design and I completed coursework at the University of Colorado Boulder on Astronomy, Immersive Media Production, Computer Science, VR app development, Philosophy and Business as well as Media Studies courses on the theory of live performance and Sci-Fi in film and literature. One of the courses I took at the University of Colorado Boulder, which took place in the Black Box Experimental Studio, was focused on ambisonics and immersive sound where we learned the ins and outs of a 40:4 speaker array that utilizes Dante and produced ambisonic compositions using Ableton and Reaper. My presentation for the course final also included a 360° projection mapped Resolume performance. During my time at Naropa Institute and Fort Lewis college I studied Psychology and Meditation. As part of my training in the MORPHOS program we learned how to projection map digital domes and planetariums using multi projector systems with a media server and I have projection mapped several domes under tight deadlines for sold out festivals and large concerts.
