Job Opportunity: Astronomy Educator at South Carolina State Museum
The South Carolina State Museum is seeking a full-time Astronomy Educator to help support the astronomy-related programs and facilities.
The Astronomy Educator will be an active contributing member of the Department of Audience Engagement and responsible for supporting all facets of the museum’s astronomy-related facilities and programs. As with most Audience Engagement staff, this person will be cross-trained to work in a variety of settings. This full-time position reports to the Planetarium Manager and primarily involves assisting with all aspects of onsite planetarium operations, including the presentation of live and recorded shows, the development of custom content, the training of part-time staff, and general maintenance, troubleshooting and upkeep.
This position will also support outreach programs utilizing the portable planetarium in the form of equipment maintenance and upkeep, assisting with the training of part-time staff on its usage, and occasionally taking it to schools across the state to present astronomy programs.
Required duties also include assisting with the development of hands-on astronomy activities for programs outside of the planetarium, such as summer camps and special events, and providing operational support and backup for the observatory, which can consist of troubleshooting common issues, assisting observatory guests, and delivering observatory programs.
Minimum requirements include having a basic working knowledge of the night sky and general astronomy concepts, as well as either a post-secondary degree in a STEM-related field, science education or science communication or at least 2 years’ experience working in either formal or informal education delivering science educational programming. Training will be provided on usage of equipment and systems. It is also essential to have an endless enthusiasm to both learn and share, an ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team, and the flexibility to work evenings, weekends and some holidays as needs require.
