Job Opportunity: Planetarium Coordinator at Michigan Science Center

The Michigan Science Center currently has a job opening for a full time Planetarium Coordinator.

The Michigan Science Center currently employs about 50 staff at the museum location in Midtown Detroit, on the campus of Wayne State University in the heart of the cultural center.



General Summary

Manages all planetarium operations. Programs and operates theater systems and makes minor repairs and upgrades. Researches and creates unique educational programming. Presents entertaining and educational shows to the public. Works on a team that operates five unique theaters within the museum.

Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited and reputable college or university in science, astronomy, physics, museum studies or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Michigan Science Center

Surrounded by other great institutions such as the DIA, Detroit Historical Museum, Motown Museum, CCS, Detroit Public Library, MOCAD, African American Museum of History, DMC and Federal Reserve, the Michigan Science Center has an annual budget of over $5 million, and have had over 100,000 people through the museum since January 1st.

The science center first opened up in Detroit 1970 and moved to its current location in 1978. Since the original opening, over 8 million people have come through the doors to learn, have fun and get inspired.

Five theaters – planetarium, IMAX dome theater, electrical theater, science stage and 4D theater – are operated by a full time team of 6 with the assistance of 10 part time staff and additional support from other staff teams.

So far this year The theaters team has performed and/or shown over 3,200 shows and films, serving over 143,000 customers. The average customer to the science center sees more than one show during each visit.
