Job Opportunity: Planetarium Manager at the Settlemyre Planetarium
The Settlemyre Planetarium at the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC is looking for a full-time Planetarium Manager.
The Planetarium Manager, under limited supervision, researches, purchases and presents planetarium programs, large format films, and other science-based programs (astronomy, energy, environmental science, etc) for a full-dome planetarium; develops, coordinates/presents related events to complement CHM mission; coordinates with Education and other departments for education and special events; provides expertise to the Museum in information technologies as time allows.
This newly-renovated planetarium uses a MediaGlobe 3 system under at 30 ft. dome with 55 seats. There is a monitor showing ViewSpace just outside the planetarium entrance and an evening show followed by telescopic observing with the local astronomy club is currently offered on the second Tuesday of each month. One daily public show is presented in the afternoon Tuesday – Friday with scheduled school programs most mornings. Additional public shows are offered on Saturdays and school holidays.
The manager will present most group, school, and public shows, maintain the astronomy-related equipment, and develop programs using a library of purchased content. The normal work schedule is Tuesday – Saturday. Anyone interested should have experience in technology, science education, and/or astronomy; three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A passion and ability to share and communicate knowledge of astronomy is crucial.
