Description
The new digital planetarium of the Regional Museum of Natural History in Plovdiv was built in 2015 by the American company Evans & Sutherland, a world leader in the field, together with their European partners, Skypoint Planetarium. It features the immersive planetarium system Digistar 5, and is the first of its kind in Bulgaria. In 2017, the planetarium was upgraded to active 3D capability, and can show fully immersive 3D shows, achieving yet another ‘first’ for Bulgaria.
The planetarium boasts a dome 8 meters in diameter, and is equipped with a special laser projector with a “fisheye” lens, which allows projection on the entire dome simultaneously. The planetarium accommodates 50 seats, as well as wheelchair spaces for people with motor disabilities. The planetarium software brings the visitors on an immersive journey to various locations in the Cosmos, objects and phenomena that occur in the Universe. This is achieved in real time thanks to the Digistar 5 unique live 3D rendering system.
